ABSTRACT Rapid environmental and societal transformations are reshaping the challenges humanity faces. In this context, geology stands out as a discipline uniquely positioned to support sustainable development. By combining insights from Earth’s long history with evidence of recent changes, geology not only preserves our understanding of the planet but also contributes to building a resilient, low-carbon future. Its expertise enables responsible resource—including water—use, land management, risk mitigation, and environmental stewardship, whereas geoheritage fosters education and cultural identity. Despite its essential role, geology is sometimes viewed with skepticism due to its association with fossil fuels or mineral exploitation. To remain relevant, the discipline must evolve into more applied and socially engaged fields. This modernization requires adapting university curricula, strengthening research that addresses societal needs, and improving communication so that complex processes are explained in accessible ways. Strengthening bridges with the full spectrum of scientific, social, and human disciplines is essential for geology to contribute meaningfully to today’s global challenges. Equally important is outreach: Initiatives that communicate geology in accessible language and connect directly with communities make the discipline more inclusive and visible, ensuring that advances in geological knowledge reach the public. Through these changes, geology will enhance employability, broaden its relevance, and secure recognition as a discipline central to sustainable development and human resilience.
