Oral health is a key public health priority and an important element of the Healthy Child Programme, as tooth decay in early life can have severe consequences on children's future health and wellbeing. It is one of the main causes of hospital admissions in 5–9-year-olds. This article looks at the pathophysiology of cavities and gum disease, and offers key oral hygiene advice for children and families.
