The purpose of this paper is to recall, and share with the reader, my experience of composing a new score for Dovzhenko's timeless masterpiece, Zemlya (1930). The score was premiered in America, along with the digitally restored version of the film, at the Academy Museum of Motion Picture, in Los Angeles, on the 23rd of July 2023. My score for this film-the first ever by a non-Ukrainian to be published widely-is preceded by three magnificent editions: the first by Ukrainian composer Levko Revutsky which graced the original release; a second version by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov which was published in 1971 to coincide with a first restoration of the film negative (the is my personal favourite for its orchestral richness and depth of emotion); and a third by the Ukrainian band Dakha Brakha.
