Longitudinal Trends of Pica Behaviors, Behavioral Support, and Healthcare Utilization in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at increased risk for pica. This 10-year retrospective chart review investigated genotype, type of pica behavior, behavioral health therapy received, and average yearly healthcare utilization (i.e., emergency room visits, hospitalizations). Twenty-four (24%) patients displayed pica behaviors and did not have higher yearly ED visits or hospitalizations. Only 21% of patients with pica received behavioral health treatment, indicating that behavioral treatment is underutilized. Results indicate a need for increased awareness of pica in pediatric patients with SCD and for effective medical and behavioral health follow-up.
