王抗曝 (Lawrence K. Wang). 2026. 《王怀萱:二十世纪中国历史风暴中若尘的人生》Wang Huaixuan: A Life Like Dust in the Storms of Twentieth-Century Chinese History. Global Humanities and Liberal Arts, 2026(5B). Lenox Institute Press, Auburndale, Massachusetts, USA.; 55 pages. ABSTRACT: This commemorative essay honors the life of Mr. Wang Huaixuan (courtesy name Ruochén) whose life was deeply shaped by the political upheavals of twentieth-century China. He was born in Jiangshan County of Zhejiang Province. His father was General Wang Puchen, a distinguished military officer who was awarded the Yunhui Medal by President Chiang Kai-shek of the Republic of China. As the son of a military family, Wang Huaixuan received elite training in criminal investigation and intelligence service. However, the political transformation of China after 1949 profoundly altered his life. Detention, escape, and later political suspicion caused him to spend much of his life under detention (early stage), or imprisonment (formal), or long term restriction and surveillance (later years). Despite these hardships, he remained loyal to his country and believed he had done nothing wrong. Near the end of his life in 2000, he received a presidential pardon from President Chen Shui-bian of the Republic of China, acknowledging that the injustices he endured were largely caused by the historical circumstances of the time. Originally written in 2001 as a memorial essay, this text is republished in 2026, the 25th anniversary of his passing, as both a family tribute and a microhistorical reflection on the human cost of modern Chinese political upheavals.
