ABSTRACT Recent advances in electro‐optical systems and the availability of low cost computers have resulted in the development of fully automated objective optometers. The most recent of these instruments in the Dioptron which is based on a principle of image analysis. Measurements of refractive error on unselected clinic patients were made using the Dioptron and compared to findings obtained by standard refractive procedures. Analysis of the data established high values for the reliability and validity of the data.
