This paper explores the intersection of digital transformation and environmental sustainability, focusing on the adoption of digitalization and smart services within industrial sectors. By analyzing survey data from 99 companies in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, the study addresses the following research questions: What are the key drivers and barriers to integrating digital technologies with sustainability practices? What is the current adoption rate of digitalization initiatives in industry? Using quantitative analysis, the study identifies that only 28% of surveyed firms have comprehensively implemented digitalization strategies, despite 75% recognizing their potential for advancing sustainability goals. Key motivations for adopting sustainable practices include customer requirements, regulatory compliance, and environmental protection. The findings reveal significant knowledge gaps and highlight the necessity for increased education and investment in digital competencies. The paper contributes to the literature by providing empirical evidence on the digitalization-sustainability nexus and offers actionable recommendations for policymakers and industry leaders. Limitations and avenues for future research are discussed.
