A B C D cb1 vaccination blocks SARS-CoV-2 transmission in hamsters. (A) Schematic diagram for the experimental setup. 4 to 5 wk old Syrian hamsters (donors, n = 3 per group) received I. N. vaccination either with 10 5 PFU of cb1 or PBS as a control under anesthesia. On the day 21 postvaccination, all donors were challenged with 10 5 PFU of RGWT-SARS-CoV-2 or PBS. To assess aerosol transmission, nave hamsters (gray) were exposed to infected donors (yellow) placed in adjacent cages for 8 h at 24 h postinfection, then housed separately. For direct-contact transmission, donor and nave hamsters were cohoused together beginning at 24 hpi for 14 consecutive days. Body weight and infectious viral titers in oral swabs of donor (B) and recipient hamsters (C and D) were recorded. OS, Oral swab samples; CC, close contact.
