Environmental degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pollution levels have made environmental governance one of the most pressing challenges of the twenty-first century. Governments across the world are exploring technological innovations to improve environmental monitoring and regulatory enforcement. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful technological tool capable of transforming environmental governance through predictive analysis, automated monitoring systems, and data-driven policy making. AI technologies enable authorities to analyse large volumes of environmental data collected from satellites, sensors, drones, and geographic information systems. These technologies can assist in climate modelling, pollution monitoring, biodiversity conservation, and disaster prediction. By improving the accuracy and efficiency of environmental monitoring systems, AI has the potential to significantly strengthen environmental protection mechanisms. However, the use of artificial intelligence in environmental governance also raises complex legal and ethical challenges. Issues relating to accountability, algorithmic transparency, data governance, and regulatory oversight remain largely unaddressed in many legal systems. Existing environmental legislation in India, including the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and other pollution control laws, were enacted before the emergence of artificial intelligence technologies and therefore do not contain provisions regulating AI-based environmental monitoring systems. This paper examines the role of artificial intelligence in enhancing environmental governance and analyses the legal challenges associated with its implementation. The study evaluates the adequacy of existing environmental legal frameworks in addressing technological developments and proposes policy recommendations for integrating AI technologies into environmental regulation. The paper concludes that although artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities for improving environmental protection, effective governance requires comprehensive regulatory frameworks that ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical use of AI technologies.
