This article provides an overview of Taiyuan's geographical, industrial background and urban development process, from a planned economy to a market economy. It focuses on analyzing the four main types of housing in Taiyuan: the quadrangle courtyard houses embody traditional family culture, the collective housing of units reflects the characteristics of a planned economy, the workers' social housing is a product of the transitional period, and the high-rise commercial housing marks the rise of a market economy. Housing prices are significantly influenced by public space, the completeness of facilities and the location of schools. With the advancement of urbanization, the housing structure in Taiyuan has been constantly evolving, from family communities to unit communities, and then to commercialized housing under a market economy, reflecting social changes and the changing needs of people's lives.
