Compression therapy is a key component of managing lower-limb lymphoedema and may be delivered using bandaging, hosiery or adjustable wraps. Understanding the advantages and limitations of different compression options supports healthcare practitioners to select the most appropriate therapy for individual patients. A holistic approach is required, incorporating limb shape, severity of oedema, skin condition, the patient’s ability to apply garments and personal preferences to promote concordance and long-term self-care. Healthcare practitioners also need to understand garment construction, fabric characteristics and compression standards and classes, and how these factors influence treatment effectiveness. Selecting appropriate compression hosiery can be challenging in community practice. This article aims to support community nurses by simplifying compression hosiery selection for patients with lymphoedema.
