Professional Ethics and Librarianship in the Digital Age

Professional ethics forms the foundation of librarianship, guiding librarians in delivering fair, responsible, and unbiased information services. In the digital era, the ethical responsibilities of librarians have expanded significantly due to the rapid growth of information technologies. Issues such as privacy protection, intellectual freedom, copyright management, equitable access to information, and information authenticity have become central concerns in modern libraries. This paper examines the significance of professional ethics in librarianship and explores the ethical challenges that arise in the digital information environment. It also highlights the role of professional codes of ethics developed by international organizations such as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and the American Library Association (ALA). The study concludes that adherence to ethical standards and professional values is essential for librarians to maintain trust, protect user rights, and promote equitable access to knowledge in the digital age.
