An archaeological field evaluation has been completed on the site of a proposed extension to the Elvaston quarry, operated by Tarmac Roadstone. Six trial trenches were excavated in selected locations. The trial trenches did not reveal the presence of any features of archaeological interest. During the fieldwork it was noted that surface finds within the assessment area included sherds of Romano-British pottery. As a result of this a rapid fieldwalking survey programme was carried out over the arable land within the site. The results of this have provided some indication of the areas mostly likely to contain archaeological remains associated with past human activity.
