Advancement pathways for nurse practitioners can increase employee engagement and retention. This article describes the implementation of a Nurse Practitioner Advancement Pathway (NPAP) within the Division of Critical Care Medicine in a large academic medical center. Pre- and post-NPAP implementation employee engagement and alignment scores over the course of 3 years were compared. The NPAP was viewed as positive by participants and resulted in positive organizational outcomes. As the complexity of advanced practice provider (APP) roles increases, creating models that promote professional advancement and acknowledge extra clinical and academic involvement ensures that APPs are recognized as valued members of the team.
