Crime incident is one of the greatest challenges facing public transport system in developed and developing countries, including Nigeria. This study examined the perception of passengers on the effects of crime incidents on the patronage of public transport in Nigerian mega-city (Lagos metropolis). A Multi-stage sampling procedure was used for data collection. A sampling ratio of 0.0165% was used to randomly select respondents, and administered 1,599 questionnaires. Data obtained were analyzed using frequency distribution, and correlation analysis was used to test the stated hypothesis. Among the causes of crime incidence in public transport perceived by passengers in the study included; poor quality of bus stops, unemployment/poverty, poor law enforcement, inadequate transport infrastructure, poor land use pattern, ineffective regulation of public transport service etc,. Result also revealed that a positive correlation (co-efficient (r) value of 0.868) exists between number of trips made by passengers and volume of crime incidents experienced (Hypothesis). To encourage patronage and reduction of crime incidence in public transport, the study identified measures that can facilitate a crime-free and sustainable public transport system.
