Archaeological investigations were undertaken by Worcestershire Archaeology (formerly Worcestershire Historic Environment & Archaeology Service) between 2009 and 2012 at St Martin's Quarter (previously Lowesmoor Trading Estate) in Worcester, a large area of land immediately to the east of City Walls Road (NGR: SO 8528 5507). This took place in advance of major redevelopment, and comprised a staged programme of evaluation, area excavation and watching brief observations on groundworks prior to, and alongside, construction. This site was close to the Roman settlement and just outside one of the medieval city gates, and documentary sources had indicated medieval tilemaking was a major enterprise in this area. Large parts of the site were later occupied by two major 19th-century industrial complexes: the Grainger Porcelain Works, and the Hill Evans Vinegar Works.
