Libraries play a vital role in preserving intangible cultural heritage (ICH), particularly through the development of local history collections. Intangible heritage—such as oral traditions, folklore, dialects, rituals, and community knowledge—is often at risk due to globalization, urbanization, and cultural homogenization. Libraries act as cultural repositories by documenting, archiving, and digitizing such materials, while ensuring community engagement and access. Local history collection development not only preserves unique cultural expressions but also strengthens community identity and intergenerational continuity. This paper examines the role of libraries in safeguarding ICH with a special focus on local history initiatives, highlighting strategies, challenges, and future directions.
