AR-enhanced gamified field studies significantly improve student engagement and short-term retention of local biodiversity and ecological classification knowledge, with retention rates rising from 52% to 80% in some contexts. These gains are attributed to immersive, interactive experiences that leverage cognitive and motivational mechanisms. However, evidence for sustained long-term retention (beyond one year) is limited, suggesting that ongoing reinforcement and adaptive, narrative-rich interventions may be necessary to maintain these benefits over time.
