The equine digital flexor tendon sheath is surrounded by three annular ligaments: the palmar/plantar annular ligament, the proximal digital annular ligament and the distal digital annular ligament. These ligaments all have similar functions with pathology leading to lameness as a result of constriction of the digital flexor tendon sheath. Palmar/plantar annular ligament pathology is well recognised in horses but there are limited reports of pathology of the proximal and distal digital annular ligaments of the digital flexor tendon sheath. This article provides an overview of the basic anatomy of the annular ligaments and highlights the clinical features, diagnostics and treatment options for equine annular ligament pathology.
