Abstract: The named swords of the alliterative Morte Arthure identify rulers and signal the poem’s focus on empire and dynasty. Gawayne is thus presented as Arthur’s worthiest heir as the only uncrowned bearer of a named sword, and Mordred’s treachery and corruption is revealed in the theft of Arthur’s ceremonial sword. (MAF)
