Objective of the study is to analyze patriotism as a spiritual and moral phenomenon in the modern socio-cultural space in the context of the problems of forming patriotic values and educating citizens within the framework of modern Russian state policy. The methodological basis of the study is formed by the principles of socio-philosophical comparative studies, system-structural and institutional analysis and synthesis, phenomenological approach and dialectical method. The authors rely on the works of classics of philosophical thought, domestic and foreign thinkers devoted to the analysis of the nature and essence of patriotism as a spiritual and moral phenomenon, a form of socio-cultural and national-state identification of the individual and society. Results of the study. show that patriotism as a spiritual and moral phenomenon implies a certain value attitude of a person to the Fatherland, characterized by emotional attachment to one's homeland, awareness of belonging to the history and culture of one's country, based on traditional values, and an idea of responsibility for solving fundamental social problems. Such an attitude is formed through patriotic education. Patriotism can be considered an important element of the spiritual sphere of an individual. True or authentic patriotism acts as a unity of the spiritual component in the life of an individual, qualities of citizenship and high social activity, realized by a person for the benefit of society. This study will be useful for further study of patriotism as a spiritual and moral phenomenon and useful for developing programs for patriotic education of Russian citizens as one of the fundamental factors of national unity.
