Abstract Rationale Bronchiectasis being a chronic respiratory disease can lead to airflow limitation& Impulse Oscillometry(IOS) is an effort independent advanced pulmonary function test that can be useful in evaluating lung function in such patients.Purpose of this research was to study various IOS parameters in patients of bronchiectasis. Methods Study was conducted for 3months at KGMU,India.10 patients of Bronchiectasis of different etiology, clinical characteristics & extent of involvement were subjected to IOS and various parameters of Resistance(R5,R20,R5-R20), Reactance(Xin,Xex5Hz), Goldman’s triangle area(Ax) and Frequency of resonance(Fres) were recorded.Bronchiectasis Severity Index(BSI)&FACED(FeV1,Age,Chronic Colonisation,Extension,Dyspnea) scores were also calculated. Results Out of 10patients 4(40%)were of Post tubercular(TB) bronchiectasis,3(30%)patients were of Allergic Broncho Pulmonary Aspergillosis& 3(30%)patients were of post infection.IOS was suggestive of obstruction in 6patients with 2 patients having small airway involvement& 4 having involvement of both small&large airways.Post bronchodilator Reversibility was observed in 2 patients.Restriction was suggested in 4 patients based on Xins and Xex parameters.BSI Scores were severe in 6 out of 10 patients with all post TB patients having severe BSI.FACED scores were severe in 6 out of 10 patients. However no corelation was observed between the scores and the IOS parameters.IOS was able to pick up changes in those patients where spirometry couldn’t be performed or was found to be normal. Conclusion IOS requires minimal cooperation&can detect lung function abnormalities in bronchiectasis even when spirometry results appear to be normal. It is particularly useful to detect small airway changes&can also indicate restriction.
