Due to restriction on access, the excavator used was a 1.5T mini digger, fitted with a 800mm ditching bucket and rubber caterpillar tracks. Spoil was removed from the excavation area and stored using a mini dumper. The 40m development area formed part of the gardens to the north of the present house and was encompassed by the north and west facing house elevations. The top-soil comprised of a light yellowish grey friable clayey silt to a thickness of 0.30m. This was stripped onto a light yellow brown iron stone natural with yellow clay. This covered the extension footprint and the top of the two following foundation trenches parallel to each elevation. The study area lies in close proximity to the scheduled monument, although only a small area was excavated for the new extension. No intercutting features were present within the natural sub-strata which was partially disturbed by the present building foundations.
