It might be thought, and a few people indeed do think, that biologists should take a `general' degree in mathematics, physics and chemistry before they start studying biology. But this is impossible, impracticable advice except for the occasional student. In order to try to assess how much physics (and I will range into mathematics and physical chemistry too) they ought to have, we should enquire what biologists do, professionally, and of what biology consists.
