The hypothesis of the social participation career has two main sources of variation, occupational career and family life cycle. This paper explores the effects of stage in family life cycle on social participation. It is concluded that high social participation is facilitated by marriage but inhibited by the family. The form of particpation consistent with the family is home localism.
