The effects of conditions of anonymity and outcome contingencies on instrumentality beliefs of raters and the relationship of these beliefs to rating behavior was investigated. Behavior was operationalized as relative halo and rating level. Results suggested that manipulations affected cognitive variables and that cognitions were somewhat related to behavior.
