In the female both the lower urinary and the lower genital tracts derive from the primitive urogenital sinus, and in adult women the urethra and the bladder base are next to the vagina. It is not therefore surprising that sexual activity may cause urinary symptoms and that lower urinary tract dysfunction may cause sexual problems.
