During April/May 2024 Granta Heritage hand dug three test pits in the churchyard at St. Mary and St Botolph's Church, Thorney to investigate the potential for the depth of archaeology in relation to the possibility of using the line of the pathway from the north door to run a drain for proposed construction of a kitchen and toilet facility inside the church. A single in situ human burial was encountered at 850mm below ground level and left undisturbed; a small number of disarticulated bones were collected and reinterred. Finds included sherds of late Anglo Saxon Pottery. In general the range of pottery wares found at the church is typical of the area in each period, with no unusual or non-local fabrics present.
