This essay argues that twenty-first-century physics is caught in a paradox: unprecedented technological triumph alongside structural stagnation in its most fundamental questions. It traces that stagnation to a missing ontological layer — the question of what the mathematical structures of our effective theories are actually descriptions of — and distinguishes it from the ontological machine: the single dynamics of a single substrate that generates different effective theories as limiting cases, much as statistical mechanics once did for thermodynamics. Surveying seven open problems (quantum gravity, dark matter, dark energy, the matter–antimatter asymmetry, the hierarchy problem, inflation, and the foundations of quantum mechanics), it contends that none can be resolved by "horizontal" unification at the level where it arose, and that every ad hoc patch is itself evidence that effective theories are in principle insufficient. Its central, contemporary claim: in an age when artificial intelligence can generate a formally convincing patchwork "theory" in an afternoon, the beauty of equations and a local fit to data cease to be criteria of truth. What remains unforgeable is the ability of a single ontological machine to hold global consistency across all of physics at once. Ontology thus becomes not old-fashioned metaphysics but a defense mechanism against the cheap overfitting of reality. CPQ (Compressed Physics) is discussed as one concrete attempt to formulate such a layer. 1 Porschová, A. (2026).
