Tomographic scanning with collimators inclined to the plane of interest is examined for resolution capability. Calculations are presented for inclined single conical channels and focusing collimators to demonstrate general characteristics of this method. Focusing collimator systems are shown to be a special case of the general method. Results of the general analysis led to the design of a new machine, the Tomoscanner, which utilizes a slit collimator combined with the concept of the hybrid scanner of Davis. The “slit-hybrid collimator” system is easily incorporated into a system capable of viewing many layers simultaneously.
