Extracellular stimulation of nerve cells by planar electrode array was performed. Sensory nerve cells were cultured on planar electrode array substrates fabricated by semiconductor technology. Neurite outgrowth was controlled by the surface microstructure of the substrates. Neurites were successfully guided to the stimulating sites. Electrical response at the cell body corresponding to neurite Stimulation was recorded. The result suggested that this method is useful for studying signal processing in a single neuron.
