Recently, Japan has shown signs of a shift from its traditional postwar pacifism to nationalism, which may change the dynamics of international relations in East Asia. Opinion polls show that Japanese youth are increasingly nationalistic. This article aims to address several factors that contributed to the shift, including the global context, media and intellectuals, the decline of leftist parties, the increasing popularity of nationalist manga (Japanese comic books), Internet, and international sporting events.
