Purpose After introducing the reader to the nuanced organizational learning environment of higher education, as well as sustainability as a training and development topic, this theoretical paper proposes an integrative framework of un/learning for the purpose of treating sustainability as an ethical HRD project in higher education organizational settings. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses the narrative literature review method to critically assess the existing literature surrounding the examined topic, as well as the method of theoretical synthesis, to propose a new conceptual model. Findings The framework proposes an organizationally embedded adult education mechanism involving a holistic interaction of diverse reflective moral processes at both the personal and institutional level, and it includes practical guidance for application and adaption. Originality/value While sustainability has a deep ethical core, this core has remained underutilized in the ways it has been systemically treated as an HRD project. This paper offers a morally informed model that considers both internal and external dimensions of the organizational environment.
