The vast scale of urbanisation in the United Arab Emirates creates both instant buildings and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste. This paper reviews the waste-management strategies being adopted at the £10 billion Al Raha Beach Development in Abu Dhabi, which aim to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover construction waste by over 80%. They include developing a site-specific waste management plan, emphasising the importance of waste minimisation and management, creating a space on site for waste streams, ensuring there are dedicated resources and time, and being persistent in developing waste management options. The financial benefits to the developer have proved considerable.
