In 1957 the Society for Experimental Biology organized a symposium on The Biological Replication of Macromolecules. At this symposium Crick (1958) presented, in the clearest possible terms, his hypothesis that the linear sequence of deoxyribonucleosides in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) controlled the linear sequence of ribonucleosides in ribonucleic acid (RNA) and that this in turn controlled the linear sequence of amino acids during protein biosynthesis. While this idea had been expressed earlier in less detail (Haldane, 1937) the very precision of Crick's hypothesis, coupled with the scanty nature of the evidence, provided a challenge to further experiment. At the same symposium Sanders, Huppert, and Hoskins (1958) described a new and relatively simple method for the cultivation and assay of encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus.
