Empirical relationships have been derived relating the stream deoxygenation rate, Kd, to indices relevant to stream hydraulic geometry. The data base was developed from available literature and included 36 separate reaches from 23 river systems. Observed deoxygenation coefficients were found to vary significantly from 0.08 per day to 4.25 per day. Steady-state streamflow and wetted perimeter were the best predictors of the deoxygenation coefficient. The predictive equations involving flow and wetted perimeter represents a more reliable methodology for rate estimation than is currently available. For flows greater than 800 cfs (22.4 m³/sec) conventional laboratory to adequately quantify Kd.
