About 30 years ago the diagnosis was often made on the basis of a systolic murmur over the aortic area without any other confirmatory evidence. It became particularly clear during the great war that this was entirely insufficient evidence to warrant the diagnosis, when in some army camps and in the hands of some boards that were examining recruits, large numbers of cases of aortic stenosis were being reported.
