A Generally Applicable Digital Computer Based Mathematical Model for the Generation of Shear Forces by Pneumatic Tyres

SUMMARY Following discussion of the different approaches which have been taken to the modelling of the generation of shear forces by pneumatic tyres, particularly in a road vehicle handling simulation context, the steady state version of a new model is described. The model has a simple physical foundation, and contains few parameters, but is capable, through digital computation, of generating a virtually unlimited range of force and moment properties which are qualitatively and quantitatively accurate if its parameters are appropriately chosen. The model description includes mathematical analysis by means of which the model assumptions can be converted into force systems, and sample results are plotted in conventional forms to allow easy comparison with published experimental results. The model offers a combination of simplicity, power, and economy of computation and parameter evaluation which suggests that it will be advantageously employed in vehicle simulation work. It can also be used to explain and to enhance understanding of tyre behaviour.
