Sources of confusion are identified among interpretations off information-processing, cognitive constructivist, social constructivist, and sociocultural approaches to understanding classroom learning. Attention to subtle differences among perspectives indicates areas in which particular approaches provide more incisive understanding of different aspects of classroom learning and suggest different ways of setting up learning environments. Several alternative research paradigms are suggested to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying processes and the broad contexts that support or constrain classroom learning.
