Sense of place and community: Points of intersection with implications for leisure research1

Abstract Our paper explores the points of contrast and intersection between two theories that have been used to understand the relationships between people and locales: sense of place and community theory. We distil crucial elements from each approach: for sense of place we include setting characteristics, behaviours, symbolic meanings, and evaluations such as attachment and identity. We use the interactional approach to represent community theory, and thus include ecology, society, and action components. We create and introduce a matrix that intersects these elements and find that much common ground exists: there is significant potential for cross fertilization between the approaches. The utility of the approach is illustrated using public participation as an example topic of interest to resource and recreation managers. Résumé Notre papier examine les points de contraste et d'intersection entre deux théories, la théorie du sentiment d'appartenance à un milieu, et une théorie communautaire. C'est deux approches théoriques ont été souvent employées pour comprendre les rapports entre l'individu et sont local. Nous décrivons les éléments cruciaux de chaque approche : pour le sens de l'endroit nous incluons les caractéristiques de place, les comportements, significations symboliques, et des évaluations telles que le sens d'attachement et l'identité spatiale. Une approche théorique décrivant les interactions sociales des acteurs communautaires parvient à illustrer les liens entre les mouvements sociaux, l'écologie, et la société. Une matrice entrecroisée nous aide à constater que beaucoup de liens communs existent entre ces deux approches. Ce qui veut dire qu'il a donc un potentiel significatif pour la fécondation croisée entre ces deux approche. L'utilité de ces approches est illustrée en utilisant la participation publique comme exemple de matière d'intérêt aux directeurs de récréation.
