A southern Milky Way neutral survey, designated P18, was conducted with the 18 m radio telescope at Parkes, NSW, Australia. The survey covers the range from 240 to 350 deg in galactic longitude and the range from -10 to +10 deg in galactic latitude, with 2.1 km/s velocity resolution. The present investigation is concerned with the preliminary results on the overall galactic distribution of H I. Data from a survey of H I for l = 10 to 250 deg conducted by Weaver and Williams (1973, 1974) is combined with P18 to provide global galactic coverage. Contour maps of the neutral hydrogen distribution in the outer Galaxy are presented. The presented contour maps offer a good comparison of the two galactic hemispehres. A lack of bilateral symmetry in the surface density is observed. The total H I mass in the Galaxy is estimated to be 4.81 x 10 to the 9th solar masses, of which 81% lies beyond R = 11 kpc.
