Abstract In the first part of this paper it is shown, by means of the general Bloch method, how it is possible to construct the probable band structure of aluminium. The distribution of its three valence electrons in the two Brillouin zones is the following: the first zone is nearly full and the Fermi surface lies near the bounding square faces of this zone in the 100-directions. The second zone is partly filled with one electron and the Fermi surface has the shape of semi-ellipsoids surrounding the eight points (±π/a, ±π/a, ± π/a) of the k-space. The second part of this paper contains the interpretations of some principal features of the soft X-ray emission spectra of aluminium.
