Does the addition of glucose, insulin, or Krebs cycle metabolites promote beating in perfused anoxic rat hearts?
Glucose, insulin, and Krebs cycle metabolites can promote and sustain beating in anoxic perfused rat hearts.
SummaryPerfused rat hearts subjected to anoxia rapidly stopped beating and did not recover when restored to oxygen 65 min later. However, anoxic beating was promoted by glucose in a concentration dependent fashion; maximal response was achieved at 20 mM. Addition of insulin or select Krebs cycle metabolites to the glucose (5 mM) perfusing medium further elevated anaerobic beating.
