Bone marrow transplantation has been used successfully for the treatment of increasing numbers of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) throughout the world. However, because of the good results using chemotherapy in many patients, transplantation has generally been reserved for high risk patients, including those who have failed chemotherapy. Thus, the selection of patients to receive marrow transplantation is of major interest. Treatment options and outcomes for ALL will be discussed as part of this brief review. The alternative use of matched related, or unrelated, and autologus transplantation will also be discussed, since donor options are becoming more numerous for patients with high risk ALL who undergo marrow transplantation
