This paper presents research performed from an intensive study at the interfaces within the construction industry. The work focuses around a civil engineering contractor working for a multi-national petrochemical client. The client can be regarded as a progressive systematic improver of its operations in terms of health and safety, cost, quality lead-time and service level. It is also willing to adopt novel methods of working. It is in this context that an alliance. Design and Build contract is being analysed primarily from a civil engineering contractors perspective. In this Design and Build scenario interface have been examined through contractual, financial, information and material flows. This paper will concentrate on the initial process of forming the team and costing the job forfit an initial scope of works through to defining how the profit will be split The emphasis is on a multi-performance metric to ensure performance along the dimension service level, quality, lead-time, safety as well as simply cost.
