This article examines the concept of homonymy, its classification, origins, linguistic characteristics, and functions in English. Special attention is paid to the distinction between homonymy and polysemy, the major types of homonyms, and their role in language development. The study demonstrates that homonyms arise through historical linguistic changes, borrowing processes, word formation, and semantic divergence. Their specific features make them an important area of research in modern linguistics, particularly in semantics, lexicology, and applied language studies.
