Abstract A liquid ion exchanger membrane electrode responding preferentially to large onium ions is described. Selectivities of the sensor for different cations vary by factors of up to 10 14 and the selectivity constants correlate closely with the corresponding exchange constants of the extracation system involved. For most cations the electrode shows theoretical response at activities >10 −6 M and has a life time of at least 4 months.
