Wheras population numbers and growth rates receive much attention in discussions of the demographic situation in China systematic analyses of the age-sex characteristics of the population--crucial to population growth--have been infrequent. A review of fragmentary data on age-sex characteristics for the nation as a whole however reveals that these data are being used increasingly to inform population debates in China. More detailed age-sex statistics available for several administrative subdivisions are suggestive of differences by sex in occupation and migration patterns. (SUMMARY IN FRE SPA)
