Small-group presentations in historical geology classes provide an excellent opportunity for students to actively participate in learning. One topic used successfully for presentations is the geologic history of the Paleozoic Era; this topic can be conveniently subdivided into different geologic periods. Students work together in groups to collect data, synthesize information, prepare a summary and orally present their work. Presentations have included group reports, skits, games and poems. The approach has received an enthusiastic response from students and is a rewarding change from the traditional lecture format.
