The challenges of sustainable development presented by the Anthropocene have had a tremendous impact on our world, and education is widely recognized as one of the most important tools to mitigate these global problems.The following paper presents an overview of the development of an EFL course taught over a semester at a Japanese university.Specifically, it attempts to demonstrate how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be utilized in an EFL context to provide a framework to raise students' awareness of sustainability issues, while helping them acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to take action for sustainable development.Finally, the paper outlines some of the key issues that should be considered by EFL practitioners who are interested in implementing the SDGs into their classrooms. 27
